Everything you need to decide before you book, with our sources and our uncertainty both on show. Where the evidence conflicts โ€” and on this island's transport it conflicts constantly โ€” we say so instead of picking a number and sounding confident.

When to go

The best time to visit

Start here

All twelve months compared on weather, sea temperature, crowds, price and what is actually open.

Skiathos in January

Out of season

For residents, returning visitors and anyone who wants the island without the island economy. Not a beach holiday.

Skiathos in February

Out of season

The coldest sea of the year and the cheapest rooms. A winter-town month, not a holiday month.

Skiathos in March

Out of season

Walking weather arrives before the tourism does. The trails are green and empty and nothing on the coast is open.

Skiathos in April

Waking up

The best month for walking and the worst for swimming. Come for the trails and the empty light, not the beach.

Skiathos in May

Shoulder

The connoisseur's month. Everything is open enough, nothing is crowded, and the island is greener than it will be again until next spring.

Skiathos in June

High season

Arguably the best all-round month on the island. Peak-season infrastructure without peak-season crowds or prices.

Skiathos in July

Peak

Hot, dry and full. The driest month of the year and the one where the island's nightlife is at full volume.

Skiathos in August

Peak

The warmest sea and the worst crowds. The fortnight before 15 August is the single busiest, priciest stretch of the Skiathos year.

Skiathos in September

High season

The other best month. The sea is still 24ยฐC after a summer of heating, the crowds thin after the first week, and prices fall with them.

Skiathos in October

Closing down

A month of two halves. Early October is a bargain with a 21ยฐC sea. Late October is a building site with the shutters going up.

Skiathos in November

Out of season

The month of the island's most important festival, and almost no visitors see it. Panagia Eikonistria, the patron saint, is celebrated on 21 November.

Skiathos in December

Out of season

The wettest month of the year. A Greek island Christmas is a real thing, but it is a town experience, not a coastal one.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Skiathos?

Five is the sweet spot: enough for a town day, two or three beach days, a round-island boat trip and one day with a hire car for the north. Three days covers the essentials if you skip the north. A week lets you add a day trip to Skopelos and a walking day without losing the holiday.

Is Skiathos expensive?

Moderately priced by Greek island standards โ€” cheaper than Mykonos or Santorini. The bus costs โ‚ฌ2โ€“3 a journey whatever the distance, which keeps getting around genuinely cheap. Prices roughly double for car hire in August, and the fortnight before 15 August is the most expensive stretch of the year for flights and rooms.

When should you book a Skiathos holiday?

For early to mid-August, months ahead โ€” that fortnight carries mass domestic Greek demand on top of international charters, and ferries and rooms sell out. For May, June, September and October there is far more slack.
