The landings are the safe spectacle. The departures are what injure people. Stand well back and behind any barrier, keep clear of the threshold when an aircraft is lining up, and never position yourself behind one.
Why Skiathos is the best plane spotting in Europe
Skiathos airport occupies a strip of land between the sea and a lagoon, with a runway of only 1,600 metres and water at both ends. That geometry leaves no margin, so aircraft on approach to runway 01 cross the public road at a height that has to be seen to be believed — low enough that people instinctively duck.
It is routinely called Europe's answer to Maho Beach in St Maarten, and the comparison holds with one difference worth knowing: Skiathos is not commercialised. There is no bar built around the spectacle and no viewing platform. It is a public car park, a road and a beach.
Exactly where to stand
The spot is the harbour and car park area at the southern end of the runway, by the runway 01 threshold. Open public space, no entrance fee, no restrictions.
From the airport terminal: exit, turn left, and walk along the runway for 5–6 minutes until you reach its southern edge.
From Skiathos Town: take the local bus to stop 0 near the port, then walk roughly 8 minutes along the Paraliakos promenade with the sea on your right. It is entirely walkable from town if you would rather not wait for a bus.
When to go
Traffic peaks on Fridays and at weekends, when the charter schedule is at its heaviest and arrivals come almost continuously. Midweek in early or late season can mean long gaps between aircraft.
For photography, early morning and late afternoon put the sun on the approaching aircraft. The middle of the day is harsh and backlit.
The beach at the runway threshold
Xanemos beach sits at the end of the runway — a 300-metre stretch of sand and pebble, rarely crowded, and one of the island's naturist beaches. It has a taverna providing sunbeds and umbrellas. Reviews of the food swing sharply between charmed and furious, so go for the aircraft rather than the lunch, and read the entry before committing.
