Frequently asked questions
Where is the best place to stay in Skiathos?
It depends on what your evenings look like. Skiathos Town if you want to walk to dinner and nightlife. Megali Ammos for a beach a kilometre from town. Troulos or Koukounaries for families with young children, both with shallow water and full facilities. Kanapitsa or Kolios for quiet. The north coast only if you are hiring a car.
Is it better to stay in Skiathos Town or Koukounaries?
Skiathos Town if you want to walk to restaurants and bars and do day trips by boat, since both ports are there. Koukounaries if the beach is the point — it is the best on the island — and you accept a 25–30 minute bus each way for an evening in town, plus watching the last departure. Koukounaries is also much more seasonal; much of it is shut in May and October.
Which part of Skiathos is best for families?
Troulos and Koukounaries are the two most consistently family-recommended. Troulos has very shallow water, lifeguards daily and its own supermarkets and shops; Koukounaries has the island's best beach with a very gentle slope into the water. Achladies and Nostos/Tzaneria are good alternatives closer to town with calm, shallow bays.
Do you need a car if you stay outside Skiathos Town?
Not on the south coast. Every resort from Megali Ammos to Koukounaries is on the single bus route, at €2–3 a journey and every 15 minutes at peak. The exceptions are the Kanapitsa peninsula, where the accommodation sits off the main road up a hill, and anywhere on the north coast or inland, where a car is essential.
Is Skiathos Town noisy at night?
In parts, yes. The island's nightlife concentrates around Bar Street on the eastern side of the harbour, Papadiamantis Street and Trion Ierarchon Square, and some venues run until around 4am. The back of town towards the ring road is the quiet side — worth specifying when you book.
