Frequently asked questions
Is there a ferry from Athens to Skiathos?
No. Skiathos is in the Sporades, which are not part of the Cyclades ferry network that serves Piraeus. To reach Skiathos by sea you travel overland from Athens to a mainland port — Volos, Agios Konstantinos, Mantoudi on Evia or Thessaloniki — and sail from there. This is one of the most common planning mistakes.
How long is the flight to Skiathos from the UK?
About three to three and a half hours. Jet2 is the largest UK operator, flying from around nine airports, with easyJet, TUI and a seasonal British Airways CityFlyer service from London City also serving the island.
How long is the Skiathos runway?
1,628 metres long and 30 metres wide, designated 01/19, laid across a narrow neck of land with sea at both ends. Because it is short, pilots fly a lower and flatter approach than normal and touch down as early as possible — which is why arriving aircraft pass so low over the road and Xanemos beach at the threshold.
Does Skiathos airport close in winter?
No, and this is a common misconception. The airport operates year-round. What is seasonal is the international traffic: charter and leisure routes run roughly mid-May to the end of October, and from November to April the schedule is primarily domestic flights to and from Athens.
Why are Skiathos flights always delayed?
Aircraft parking at the airport is very restricted, so an inbound aircraft cannot be released to land until the aircraft occupying its stand has departed. Delays follow from that constraint and compound through the day. Friday is the busiest day of the charter week and suffers the worst of it.
How far is Skiathos airport from the town?
Very close — about five minutes by car, and one of the shortest airport-to-town transfers in the Greek islands. Sources give the distance as both 2km and 4km, probably measuring to the town boundary rather than the port. Koukounaries is about 13.5km, roughly 15 minutes by taxi or 40–45 minutes by bus.
Can you take a car to Skiathos on the ferry?
Yes, on the conventional ferries. The high-speed hydrofoils and catamarans do not carry vehicles. Volos is the main gateway and the only mainland port with genuine year-round service.
