Frequently asked questions
What is the best month to visit Skiathos?
June or September for most people. Both give you a warm sea — 22°C in June, 24°C in September — with everything open, but without the crowds and prices of mid-July to late August. May and early October are the best value while the season is still running.
When is the sea warmest in Skiathos?
August, at around 26°C. July is 25°C and September 24°C. The sea lags the air by roughly two months, which is why October at 21°C is still warmer than May at 18°C.
When does Skiathos close for the season?
Businesses shut through October — the bus drops to a 30-minute frequency on 3 October and most resort businesses close in the first half of the month. From mid-October to April the island is effectively closed for tourism, with international charter flights finished and domestic flights only.
Is Skiathos worth visiting in winter?
Only if you want the island rather than the holiday. Around 5,000 people live here year-round, mostly near the old harbour, so supermarkets, kafenia and some tavernas stay open — but the resorts, beach bars and charter flights are gone. A useful detail: in winter an evening meal is easy to find and breakfast is hard.
Does the meltemi wind affect Skiathos?
Less than the Cyclades. The Sporades sit in the lee of the Pelion peninsula, so the northerly meltemi breaks before it reaches most of the island. Because the wind comes from the north and nearly all of Skiathos's resort beaches face south, the rule on a windy day is to head for the south coast. It does stop boat trips to Lalaria and the sea caves, so book those early in your stay.
When is Skiathos busiest?
The fortnight before 15 August. Dekapentavgoustos is one of Greece's biggest holidays and triggers a mass domestic migration to the islands, stacking Greek demand on top of international charter demand. Ferries and rooms sell out months ahead.
